The weather would once again play a role in Cape May
for Day Three of the 2003 USLA National Lifeguard Championships. The
fog made it nearly impossible to see the 200 meter flags and apex buoys.
Sets of waves emerged unannounced and flipped boats with ease. At least
one local South Jerseyan competitor decided to abandon his Patroni
surfboat rather than risk taking a wave solo in the American Ironman
event.
Before the scoring of the surfboat events was tallied, there was a
buzz that Monmouth County was in striking distance of LA – within
a mere 30 points. By late afternoon, fog had once again rolled in and
it was doubtful if there would be any more events.
But suddenly, the skies cleared and there was racing once again. Tyler
Morgan and Anthony Vela kicked it into high gear together on a paddleboard
to win the open Rescue Race and clinch the overall championship – the
17th in a row – for Los Angeles County.

Lifeguard Magazine for more pictures,
including many of the event winners.
