Day One of the 2003 USLA National Lifeguard Championships was Cape May weather all too familiar to veteran lifeguards who came to New Jersey’s southernmost resort town back in ’94. Competitors were greeted to thick fog and squalls of heavy rain as the Junior Lifeguard events were run on the main course and preliminaries in the surfboat and landline events were held on Course B.

Nasty sets of waves tossed many of the surfboats, capsizing even the 2002 open silver medal winners – Monmouth County’s Billy George and Warren Towns. George and Towns would recover and win their heat and qualify to continue racing Friday.
